THE site of biosynthesis of the plant hormone ethylene in the cells of higher plants is unknown. Efforts to identify the enzyme system responsible and its subcellular location have failed because ethylene-producing plant tissues stop production after homogenisation. On the other hand, ethane is produced as the main hydrocarbon gas after homogenisation of certain tissues of higher plants1,2.
