Lesions of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) produce obesity and hyperphagia. However, the underlying mechanism is unknown. The connections of the PVN with brainstem centers for autonomic control suggest that a change in autonomic function could mediate the PVN obesity syndrome.
