The effect of p-nitrophenyl-beta-D-xyloside on proteoglycan synthesis and extracellular matrix (ECM) formation by cultured bovine corneal endothelial (BCE) cells was investigated. BCE cells actively proliferating on plastic dishes produced in the absence of xyloside an ECM containing various proteoglycans. Heparan sulfate was the main 35S-labeled glycosaminoglycan component (83%). Dermatan sulfate (14%) and chondroitin sulfate (3%) were also present.
