One of the causes of heavy damage due to earthquake motions is the role of soft clay in amplifying bedrock ground motions. Improving the soil conditions using polypropylene fibres at a site in order to mitigate earthquake damage could be one of the methods to modify site conditions. In this study, the optimum fibre contents were obtained for mixtures of clay with two different types of fibre. Then the dynamic properties of polypropylene fibre reinforced clay with different fibre contents were…
Cyclic and post-cyclic shear behaviours of natural fibre reinforced soil
ABSTRACT Soil behaviour under cyclic loading is a key component in assessing potential effects of earthquakes on infrastructure and the response of earth structures to dynamic loading. In this study,
WAVE PROPAGATION IN SANDY SOIL – AN EXPERIMENTAL AND NUMERICAL MODEL
Existing seismic retrofitting techniques are mainly structural and invasive. Since earthquakes generates from soil and seismic waves propagate through it, alternative solutions for seismic
The Performance of a Sand Reinforced with Coconut Fibers Through Plate Load Tests on a True Scale Physical Model
The use of recycled materials has experienced a growing global interest in the last decades. Products like natural fibers are being studied to replace synthetic fibers in some applications because
Dynamic Triaxial Test and Microscopic Study of Solidified Muddy Soil With Different Mixing Ratios and Curing Ages
Aiming to explore the optimal mixture ratio and curing age of solidified muddy soil under dynamic load, the paper intends to investigate whether the solidified muddy soil can be used as filling of
Universal model forms for predicting the shear modulus and material damping of soils
ABSTRACT Numerous model forms have been used to predict the dynamic behaviours of soils, mainly the shear modulus and material damping. These models are used to represent normalised shear modulus
Long-wavelength propagation of waves in jointed rocks - study using resonant column experiments and model material
ABSTRACT The wave propagation in jointed rock mass depends on many factors, in particular the wave frequency, existing stress conditions and the induced strain levels. When the wavelength of the
A Method for Designing Finger Drains and Assessing Phreatic Lines for Dams
Finger drains are linear drains used to collect and conduct percolated water in embankment dams. They are arranged crosswise into earth dams, either permanently or as a technique to treat clogged
Expansive and Compressibility Behavior of Lime Stabilized Fiber-Reinforced Marine Clay
AbstractExpansive soils are liable to cause damages to engineering structures and subsequent yearly repairs worth billions of dollars worldwide. Given the extensive global occurrence of expansive s...

EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT OF SYNTHETIC FIBERS AND NONWOVEN GEOTEXTILE REINFORCEMENT ON THE STABILITY OF HEAVY CLAY EMBANKMENTS
This study evaluates two methods for repairing slope surface failures of clayey soil embankments. One method involves reinforcing the cohesive soils with randomly oriented synthetic fibers; the other

Effect of Short Polymeric Fibers on Crack Development in Clays
Earth structures constructed of clayey soils, which have a tendency to shrink and swell, develop desiccation cracks when subjected to periods of drying and wetting. Over time, the seasonal shrinking
Determination of Optimum Fiber Content in a Fiber-Reinforced Clay
The inclusion of randomly distributed short virgin polypropylene fibers (C3H6) in clay has proven to significantly improve the geotechnical properties of clay such as shear, compressive, and tensile
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF KAOLINITE/FIBER SOIL COMPOSITE
The mechanical properties of a kaolinite/fiber soil composite were evaluated by a series of laboratory unconfined‐compression, splitting‐tension, three‐point‐bending, and hydraulic‐conductivity
Mechanics of Fiber Reinforcement in Sand
Direct shear tests were run on a dry sand reinforced with different types of fibers. Both natural and synthetic fibers plus metal wires were tested. Experimental behavior was compared with
Shrinkage Properties of Soft Clay Treated with Cement and Geofibers
In this study, effects of two types of geofibers, namely polypropylene and recycled carpet, on three dimensional shrinkage properties of cement treated kaolinite and bentonite clays are investigated.
