The volvocalean microalga Haematococcus pluvialis is used as a sourceof the ketocarotenoid astaxanthin for applications in aquaculture and thepharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. This green alga accumulatesastaxanthin, mostly esterified, canthaxanthin and echinenone in lipid vesiclesoutside the chloroplast.
