Bixin is a natural red pigment extracted from annatto. Although it is widely used as a coloring agent in food, there are few studies about the effect of this carotenoid on DNA. This study aimed to investigate the effects of bixin on cytotoxicity and genotoxicity induced by doxorubicin in HL60 cells. At concentrations above 0.3 μg/mL, bixin demonstrated cytotoxic effects in HL60 cells. Furthermore, this carotenoid was neither mutagenic nor genotoxic to HL60 cells and reduced the DNA damage…

Bixin, an apocarotenoid isolated from Bixa orellana L., sensitizes human melanoma cells to dacarbazine-induced apoptosis through ROS-mediated cytotoxicity.

Bioactive Compounds from Seaweed with Anti-Leukemic Activity: A Mini-Review on Carotenoids and Phlorotannins.

The yet few data supporting anti-leukemic activity of some carotenoids and phlorotannins in some leukemia models are reviewed, particularly the combination of conventional drugs with natural compounds.

Synthesis, Leishmanicidal, Trypanocidal, Antiproliferative Assay and Apoptotic Induction of (2-Phenoxypyridin-3-yl)naphthalene-1(2H)-one Derivatives

The coexistence of leishmaniasis, Chagas disease, and neoplasia in endemic areas has been extensively documented. The use of common drugs in the treatment of these pathologies invites us to search

Synthesis, antimalarial, antiproliferative, and apoptotic activities of benzimidazole-5-carboxamide derivatives

Twenty-eight compounds of the type N-substituted-2-(5-nitroheterocyclic-2-yl)-3H-benzo[d]imidazole-5-carboxamide showed enhanced cytotoxicity against Jurkat E6.1 and HL60 two human cancer cell line, and fresh human lymphocytes.

Curcumin improves the efficacy of cisplatin by targeting cancer stem-like cells through p21 and cyclin D1-mediated tumour cell inhibition in non-small cell lung cancer cell lines

Novel evidence of the previously unknown therapeutic effects of curcumin, either alone or in combination with cisplatin on the inhibition of the CD166+/EpCAM+ subpopulation of NSCLC cell lines is provided.

Antimalarial, antiproliferative, and apoptotic activity of quinoline-chalcone and quinoline-pyrazoline hybrids. A dual action

These quinoline hybrids represent new compounds potentially useful for malaria end leukemia treatments and significant inhibition of β-hematin formation, according to the structural analysis.

Bixa orellana L. by-products’ fractions from an industrial process: antiproliferative activity on tumor cells and chemical profile

This by-product of Bixa orellana (BO extract) unsaponifiable extract becomes of great value, being a potential candidate for development of new anti-tumor ingredients, being an important cytostatic effect for BO extract.

Protective effect of bixin on cisplatin-induced genotoxicity in PC12 cells.

Doxorubicin-DNA adducts induce a non-topoisomerase II-mediated form of cell death.

It is shown that doxorubicin-DNA adducts induce a more cytotoxic response in HL-60 cells than doxorbicin as a single agent, and that theseAdducts are more cytOToxic than topoisomerase II-mediated lesions.

Antigenotoxic and antimutagenic potential of an annatto pigment (norbixin) against oxidative stress.

It is found that norbixin protects the cells against DNA damage induced by UV radiation, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and superoxide anions (O2*-), and has antimutagenic properties, based on the Salmonella mutagenicity test.

Doxorubicin‐Induced MAPK Activation in Hepatocyte Cultures Is Independent of Oxidant Damage

Doxorubicin triggers activation of ERK, JNK, and p38 kinases in primary cultures of rat hepatocytes independently of oxidant damage.

Relative inhibition of lipid peroxidation, cyclooxygenase enzymes, and human tumor cell proliferation by natural food colors.

The most abundant water soluble natural food colors are betacyanins and anthocyanins and their synergistic effects and chemical interactions at various concentrations were evaluated.
