One of the major clinical features of Alzheimer's disease is the presence of extracellular amyloid plaques that are associated with glycosaminoglycan-containing proteoglycans. It has been proposed that proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans facilitate amyloid fibril formation and/or stabilize these aggregates.
