In the present investigation, we evaluated whether the capacity for proliferation and differentiation of progesterone (Prog)-dependent osteoprogenitors in the female rat skeleton is related to the level of Prog receptors (PRs) and/or the level of circulating estrogen. We confirmed that in rats, estrogen levels at 18 months of age are higher than those at 3 months, and higher again in rats of 22.5, 25.5, and 26 months of age.
