ABSTRACT Aim: To investigate the effect of Virtual Reality Therapy (VRT) on balance and walking in children with cerebral palsy (CP). Method: A systematic search in Pubmed and Embase was performed until the 9th of July 2019. Articles were included if the population consisted of children with CP and data on balance and/or walking were reported. Results were pooled in two meta-analyses. Results: 26 articles were included. For ‘balance’ 5 and for ‘walking’ 4 were used for the meta-analyses. The…
Effect of Virtual Reality on Balance Function in Children With Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
TLDR
It is concluded that VR therapy interventions for children with CP have positive effects, however, cautious implementation is needed in clinical applications.
Efficacy of Virtual Reality-Based Rehabilitation Interventions to Improve Balance Function in Patients with Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of RCTs
TLDR
This review summarizes the specific effects of VRI on balance improvement in patients with CP and reports four major perspectives of the VRI applications: VRI settings, selection of exercises, outcome measures, and (4) long-term e-ects.
Virtual Reality in Neurorehabilitation: An Umbrella Review of Meta-Analyses
TLDR
Critical recommendations are provided for the design and implementation of future VR programs, trials and systematic reviews, including the need for high quality randomized controlled trials to test principles and mechanisms in primary studies and in meta-analyses, in order to formulate evidence-based guidelines for designing VR-based rehabilitation interventions.
Exergaming improves balance in children with spastic cerebral palsy with low balance performance: results from a multicenter controlled trial.
TLDR
This home-based exergame-training resulted in balance improvements for the current population of CP that had a low baseline function, suggesting that these children can benefit from enrolment in this type of exer game-training protocol to improve their balance.
The Use of New Mobile and Gaming Technologies for the Assessment and Rehabilitation of People with Ataxia: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
TLDR
Although there were a small number of trials and of low methodological quality, all of them reported an improvement of motor outcomes and quality of life as measured by specific scales, including the SARA, BBS, DHI, and SF-36 scores.
Nintendo Wii Balance Board therapy for postural control in children with cerebral palsy: a systematic review and meta‐analysis
TLDR
To analyse the efficacy of Nintendo Wii therapy (NWT) on functional balance in children with cerebral palsy (CP) the objective was to assess the impact of the game console on the participants' daily lives.
Virtual Reality Aided Therapy towards Health 4.0: A Two-Decade Bibliometric Analysis
TLDR
This study is the first to use VOSviewer, a commonly used software tool for constructing and visualizing bibliometric networks and developed by Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden University, the Netherlands, to conduct bibliomet analyses on VR-aided therapy from the perspective of Web of Science core collection (WoSc), which objectively and visually shows research structures and topics.

Objetivo: Abordar os efeitos da terapia com realidade virtual em criancas e adolescentes com Paralisia Cerebral de acordo com a Classificacao Internacional de Funcionalidade, Incapacidade e Saude
Efficacy of Virtual Reality-Based Rehabilitation Interventions to Improve Balance Function in Patients with Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of RCTs
TLDR
This review study examines the effects of VRI on static and functional balances of patients with CP and summarizes the effective protocols of virtual reality-based rehabilitation interventions for the CP patients.

TLDR
Virtual reality is a viable tool to improve UE function in children with cerebral palsy, however, a more vigorous research design is needed to make a conclusive recommendation.
Virtual reality based therapy for post operative rehabilitation of children with cerebral palsy.
TLDR
This is the first study on using the VR-based therapy for the postoperative rehabilitation of children with CP and results revealed that balance and manual ability were significantly improved in both the groups.

Wii-based Balance Therapy to Improve Balance Function of Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study
TLDR
The results suggest that the Nintendo® Wii Fit provides a safe, enjoyable, suitable and effective method that can be added to conventional treatments to improve the static balance of patients with cerebral palsy; however, further work is required.

TLDR
Compared with other interventions, VR seems to be an effective intervention for improving motor function in children with CP.
Immersive Virtual Reality to Improve Walking Abilities in Cerebral Palsy: A Pilot Study
TLDR
The effect could have been due to the possibility of IVR to foster integration of motor/perceptual competences beyond the training of the walking ability, giving a chance of improvement also to older and already treated children.
The effect of the Nintendo Wii Fit on balance control and gross motor function of children with spastic hemiplegic cerebral palsy
TLDR
Most children preferred the IVG but as the effect did not carry over into function, IVG should not be used in place of conventional therapy and further research is needed into its use as an adjunct to therapy.
