Effect of Pumpkin Seed (Cucurbita pepo L.) Diets on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Chemical and Morphometric Evaluation in Rats

title={Effect of Pumpkin Seed (Cucurbita pepo L.) Diets on Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Chemical and Morphometric Evaluation in Rats},
  author={M. K. Abdel-rahman},
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common disease in elderly men. Although it is a non- malignant disease, it can have a significant impact on the quality of life of elderly men. The pumpkin seed is claimed to be useful in the management of BPH. This investigation analysed the chemical composition of pumpkin seeds and examined its effect on citral-induced hyperplasia of the prostate in Wistar rats. Citral was administered orally into stomachs of male rats to induce BPH to all rats except… Expand

Cucurbita pepo inhibits benign prostatic hyperplasia induced by testosterone in sprague-dawley rats. (c2011)
The Cucurbita pepo (pumpkin) seeds are used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This study examines the effects of pumpkin seeds on dihydrotestosterone produced from testosterone thatExpand
Inhibitory effects of Nigella sativa seed oil on the testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia in rats
Background: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is the most prevalent disease of the prostate in elderly men. Since Nigella sativa has been reported to show various pharmacological effects, this studyExpand
Inhibitory effect of Coffea arabica bean in testosterone induced prostatic hyperplasia in Sprague-Dawley rats
Investigation of whether coffee is effective in preventing testosterone-induced prostatic hyperplasia in rats using testosterone propionate and estradiol valerate indicates that Coffee arabica bean oil effectively inhibited the development of BPH. Expand
Herbal medicines are promising in mild to moderate BPH, which is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland caused by proliferation of both stromal and epithelial cells. Expand
Effect of hydroalcoholic extract of pumpkin seeds on start of oogenesis and change of hormone-pituitary-ovarian axis in immature rats
Introduction: Pumpkin seed has been used in traditional medicine as a drug for improving sexual function and vigor. We did not find sufficient scientific evidence to support it. The present study wasExpand
Protective Effect of Allium cepa ( Onion ) Seeds ( AC ) Extract on Histopathology of Testis in STZ-Induced Male Rats
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the extract of Allium cepa (Onion) seeds (AC) on morphometric and histology of testis and biochemical parameters in STZ-induced male rats.Expand
The effect of Hydro-alcoholic extract of pumpkin seeds on Oogenesis and Hormone-Pituitary-Ovarian Axis in Mature Rats
Injecting hydro-alcoholic extract of pumpkin seeds increases significantly the oogenesis procedure, LH, FSH, estrogen and progesterone levels and decreases significantly the left ovaries' weight and number of primordial, primary, and secondary follicles in experimental groups in contrast to control group (P<0.05). Expand
Effects of aqueous Cucurbita pepo Linn seed extract on some haematological parameters and serum electrolytes of lactating albino rats
Thepresent study investigated the effects of aqueous Cucurbita pepo Linn seedextract on some haematological parameters and serum electrolyte concentrationof lactating albino rats. A total of twentyExpand
Protective effect of Pumpkin seed extract on sperm characteristics, biochemical parameters and epididymal histology in adult male rats treated with Cyclophosphamide
The findings indicated that pumpkin seed extract might be used as protective agent against CP‐induced reproductive toxicity and could improve the above‐mentioned parameters remarkably in CP‐treated rats. Expand
Effects of an Oil-Free Hydroethanolic Pumpkin Seed Extract on Symptom Frequency and Severity in Men with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia: A Pilot Study in Humans
The results indicate that the oil-free hydroethanolic pumpkin seed extract seems to be a very well tolerable, appropriate plant extract to support health benefits in a collective suffering from BPH related symptoms without the need of medical treatment. Expand

Citral and testosterone interactions in inducing benign and atypical prostatic hyperplasia in rats.
The results demonstrate an induction of benign as well as atypical prostatic hyperplasia following citral application and suggest a synergism between citral and testosterone resulting in hyperplastic changes in the rat ventral prostate. Expand
Role of chronic inflammation in the promotion of prostatic hyperplasia in rats.
Investigation of the effect of the immunomodulator compounds, Complete Freund Adjuvant (CFA) and cyclosporin A (CsA), administered alone or together with citral on the induction and extent of rat prostatic hyperplasia found them to play a role in the prostatic epithelial cell growth and proliferation processes.
