The effects of peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil preparations on neurophysiological, psychological and experimental algesimetric parameters were investigated in 32 healthy subjects in a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized cross-over design. Four different test preparations were applied to large areas of the forehead and temples using a small sponge and their effect was evaluated by comparing baseline and treatment measure. The combination of peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil and ethanol… Expand

Antinociceptive Effect of Peppermint in Mice
ackground: Menthol the primary component of the essential oil of peppermint is thought to be responsible for most. of its properties. It is thought to provide. a local anesthetic action and be of useExpand
Peppermint oil
TLDR
Because of its relaxing effects on smooth muscle, peppermint oil given via enema has been modestly effective for relief of colonic spasm in patients undergoing barium enemas. Expand
The effects of peppermint on exercise performance
TLDR
The results of the experiment support the effectiveness of peppermint essential oil on the exercise performance, gas analysis, spirometry parameters, blood pressure, and respiratory rate in the young male students. Expand
Efficacy and Safety of Medicinal Plants or Related Natural Products for Fibromyalgia: A Systematic Review
TLDR
It is demonstrated that MP or RNP had significant effects on improving the symptoms of FM compared to conventional drug or placebo; longer tests are required to determine the duration of the treatment and characterize the long-term safety of using MP, thus suggesting effective alternative therapies in the treatment of pain with minimized side effects. Expand
The analgesic activity of Mentha piperita (MP) leaves extract
Summary In the present work, the antinociceptive action was assayed in several experiment models in mice, Hot plate, writhing and formalin test. The alcoholic extract of MP leaves at a dose ofExpand
Letter to the Editor: Herbal Medicinal Treatment Options for Headache and Migraine
TLDR
It is shown that willow bark extract was at least as effective as aspirin in reducing inflammatory exudates and in inhibiting leukocyte infiltration as well as in preventing the rise in cytokines, was more effective than aspirin in suppressing leukotrienes, and equally effective in suppressing prostaglandins. Expand
Oral treatment with essential oil of Hyptis spicigera Lam. (Lamiaceae) reduces acute pain and inflammation in mice: Potential interactions with transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels.
TLDR
This study demonstrated the efficacy of EOHs on experimental models of nociception and found the involvement of TRP channels V1, A1 and M8 with Eohs activity, which was remarkably potent and efficient in inhibiting pain evoked by menthol, a TRPM8 channel activator. Expand
Effect of aromatherapy on pain severity in primary dysmenorrhea
TLDR
Aromatherapy reduces menstrual pain and considering the prevalence of dysmenorrheal, the low price, and harmless nature of this essence, its application in relieving menstrual cramping and pain is recommended. Expand
Effect of Eucalyptus Oil Inhalation on Pain and Inflammatory Responses after Total Knee Replacement: A Randomized Clinical Trial
TLDR
Inhalation of eucalyptus oil was effective in decreasing patient's pain and blood pressure following TKR, suggesting that eucallyptusOil inhalation may be a nursing intervention for the relief of pain after TKR. Expand
Antistress effect of Mentha piperita in rats and the role of brain serotonin and dopamine
TLDR
A role of brain Serotonin and Dopamine in antistress effect of Mentha piperita is suggested and decrease in stress induced anxiety levels also observed in mint treated animals. Expand

Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity in chronic headache
TLDR
Reduction of ES2 suggests that there is deficient activation or excessive inhibition of pontobulbar inhibitory interneurons which receive a strong input from limbic structures and might represent an interface between psychogenic and myogenic factors putatively involved in the pathogenesis of tension headache. TLDR
Results suggest that inhibitory brain-stem interneurons mediating temporalis ES2 are inhibited by serotonergic afferents, probably from the raphe magnus nucleus, and that the latter receives an excitatory input from the periaqueductal gray matter and other limbic structures, in part via opioid receptors. Exteroceptive Suppression of Temporalis Muscle Activity: Perspectives in Headache and Pain Research
TLDR
Exteroceptive suppression of temporalis muscle activity is examined as a method for investigating the pathophysiology of pain mechanisms, for assisting clinical diagnosis, and for evaluating therapeutic effects. Expand
Epidemiology of headache in a general population--a prevalence study.
TLDR
The prevalence of tension-type headache decreased with increasing age, whereas migraine showed no correlation to age within the studied age interval. Expand
Pain mechanisms: a new theory.
TLDR
A new theory of pain mechanisms is proposed, which holds that the nerve impulse pattern for pain is produced by intense stimulation of nonspecific receptors since "there are no specific fibers and no apecific endings". Expand
Contingent Negative Variation: Methods and Potential Interest in Headache
TLDR
Contingent negative variation is an event-related slow cerebral potential which has been found abnormal in migraine and might be due to hyperreactivity of central catecholaminergic pathways. Expand
