To investigate the effects of pentoxifylline (PTX) to enhance the motility and fertilization capacity of semen samples with the low-motile sperm in Asian elephants, fourteen semen collection attempts in 9 elephant bulls by manual stimulation were undertaken and eleven ejaculates fitted the criteria of investigation (0-30% motility). They were divided into two groups: poor-motile (0-9% motility) and low-motile (10-30% motility) sperm groups. Fresh semen samples were divided as a control group…

Elephant sperm motility was affected by a dilution effect and restoration of SP proportion with stallion SP, but not with elephant SP, could improve motility in chilled highly diluted sperm.

Sperm DNA stability during incubation at 37°C is a promising, discriminative parameter for selecting semen storage conditions of bulls for elephant AI and BullMax allows more linear movement and better preserves DNA stability of stored elephant spermatozoa than TEST.
Effect of Various Concentrations of Caffeine, Pentoxifylline, and Kallikrein on Hyperactivation of Frozen Bovine Semen
- Biology, MedicineBioMed research international

It is concluded from the present study that caffeine has hyperactivation efficacy at 5 mM concentration compared to other treatments, and kallikrein is not necessary for the improvement of bovine sperm motility.
Refining Asian elephant semen technologies: The need for improved quality analysis and preservation techniques
- Biology
- 2014
It was demonstrated that sperm accumulation may be a significant contributor to poor semen quality in some Asian elephant males, because semen quality could be improved by frequent (alternate day) semen collection, and inclusion of additional antioxidants in the diluents may further improve sperm DNA stability during preservation.
Evaluation of pentoxifylline and Basal Medium Eagle supplemented to diluent on cryopreserved goat spermatozoa.
- Medicine, ChemistryReproduction in domestic animals = Zuchthygiene
- 2020
The observation in this study indicates using of 3 and 6 mM PTX and BME alone may improve significantly (P < 0.05) the quality of cryopreserved goat spermatozoa.

In both normo‐and asthenozoospermic individuals pentoxifylline appeared to enhance sperm motility for at least 180 min after drug removal, which should prevent any potentially toxic effects of the drug on oocytes if it is used to enhance semen motility during in vitro fertilization.
