Abstract Context: Childhood acute otitis media (AOM) is highly prevalent. Its usual sequela of middle ear effusion (MEE) can lead to conductive hearing loss, for which surgery is commonly used. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of an osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) protocol on MEE resolution following an episode of AOM. The authors hypothesized that OMT provided adjunctively to standard care for young children with AOM would reduce the duration of MEE following the onset of AOM…
Osteopathic Manipulative Treatments for Pediatric Conditions
TLDR
Evidence of OMT being beneficial in the reduction of middle ear effusions following otitis media is found and several easy-to-use techniques are demonstrated in the hopes that this will encourage more osteopathic physicians to incorporate the use of O MT into daily practice.
A Literature Review of Osteopathic Manipulative Techniques for Otalgia
TLDR
This literature review is intended to provide an in-depth review of the existing Osteopathic manipulative techniques to treat otalgia, to present a case report of a novel Osteopathy manipulative technique for otalgia and to encourage further data driven research for the use of OMT for ot nostalgia.
Characteristics and Treatment of Pediatric Patients in an Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Clinic
TLDR
Descriptive data of pediatric patients receiving OMT from a neuromusculoskeletal medicine/OMM outpatient clinic are revealed to better understand the role of OMM as a pediatric adjunctive medical approach and to identify conditions to target for future outcome studies based on common presenting complaints.
Do you hear me?: the caregivers' experience of osteopathy for their child’s otitis media
TLDR
Research suggests osteopathy could have a place in providing adjunct treatment to standard biomedical care for otitis media, and regardless of the chosen treatment, positive shared decision making between caregiver and health professional plays a significant role in the outcome of a child's illness narrative.
Current Clinical Status of Osteopathy: Study Based on Retrospective Evidences of Six Years, A Systemic Review
TLDR
An improvement in osteopathy curricula, training programs, residential training venture, as well as patient-centered-treatment can enhance osteopathy healthcare zone.
Collegiate Athletes’ Perceptions of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment
TLDR
Findings supported previous findings about perceived efficacy of OMT in treating patients regard-less of injury and diagnosis and established causal relationship among OMT, stress and anxiety, pain, and use of pain medications.
Complementary and Alternative Medicine Treatment Options for Otitis Media
TLDR
A literature review of CAM therapies for OM, taking into account that many of these treatments, their validity and efficacy and have not been scientifically demonstrated, found that there is limited supporting evidence.
Challenging Case of Parotitis: A Comprehensive Approach
TLDR
A comprehensive patient-centered approach was used to treat a woman whose overlapping clinical conditions, lifestyle, and work factors led to an infection of the parotid gland.

The Journal of the American Osteopathic Association

TLDR
The studies reviewed herein add to the growing literature on osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) and OMTh in neonatal conditions, and Lund et al1 showed OMT benefit in premature infants with nipple feeding dysfunction.

Osteopathic Evaluation and Manipulative Treatment in Reducing the Morbidity of Otitis Media: A Pilot Study
TLDR
It is indicated that osteopathic manipulative treatment may change the progression of recurrent otitis media, a finding that supports the need for additional research in this area.
The use of osteopathic manipulative treatment as adjuvant therapy in children with recurrent acute otitis media.
TLDR
The results of this study suggest a potential benefit of osteopathic manipulative treatment as adjuvant therapy in children with recurrent AOM; it may prevent or decrease surgical intervention or antibiotic overuse.
Disappearance of middle ear effusion in acute otitis media monitored daily with tympanometry.
TLDR
The choice of antimicrobials did not influence the duration of middle ear effusion, which was much shorter than had been thought previously.
Chronic otitis media with effusion sequelae in children treated with tubes.
TLDR
Based on this cohort of healthy children with OME, although the risk of sequelae decreased over time, functional and morphologic sequelae were prevalent and may put children at risk for continuing middle ear problems as they grow into adolescence and adulthood.
Quality-of-life outcomes after surgical intervention for otitis media.
TLDR
The disease-specific quality of life of children with recurrent acute Otitis media and/or chronic otitis media with effusion with appropriate surgical indications significantly improved after surgical intervention, and most caregivers would opt again for tube placement.
Antibiotics for otitis media with effusion in children.
TLDR
The effects of antibiotics in children up to 18 years with OME were unable to find evidence of a substantial improvement in hearing as a result of the use of antibiotics for otitis media with effusion; nor did the authors find an effect on the rate of ventilation tube insertion.
Antibiotics for otitis media with effusion in children.
TLDR
Evidence of both benefits and harms associated with the use of oral antibiotics to treat children up to 16 years with OME is presented, with evidence that children treated with oral antibiotics are more likely to experience diarrhoea, vomiting or skin rash than those allocated to control treatment.
An integrated osteopathic treatment approach in acute otitis media.
TLDR
Ear pain is a common patient complaint in the practice of the primary care physician and first-line therapy usually consists of an antibiotic regimen of amoxicillin in combination with autoinflation exercises.
Otitis Media With Effusion
TLDR
The clinical practice guideline on otitis media with effusion (OME) provides evidence-based recommendations on diagnosing and managing OME in children and a subcommittee composed of experts in the fields of primary care, otolaryngology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, hearing, speech and language, and advanced-practice nursing revised the OME guideline.
Suppurative complications of acute otitis media: changes in frequency over time.
TLDR
Findings suggest an increase in incidence of acute mastoiditis with subperiosteal abscess seen at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from 2000 to 2007, although further population-based studies are required to definitively evaluate this possibility.
