In 38 African AIDS patients initiating generic HAART, GB virus C (GBV-C) RNA-positive patients retained GBV-C viraemia during 52 weeks of HAART, had a faster decline in HIV viral load (P = 0.03), fewer opportunistic infections (14.3 versus 50%, P = 0.18), and suffered no serious adverse events (none versus 61%, P = 0.008) compared with patients without GBV-C. GBV-C co-infection may be associated with a beneficial effect on African AIDS patients treated with generic HAART. 

Role of GB virus C in modulating HIV disease

There are several reports of a beneficial effect of GBV-C on HIV disease progression in vivo, and different mechanisms to explain these observations have been proposed, including modification of antiviral cytokine production, HIV co-receptor expression, direct inhibition of HIV-1 entry, T-cell activation and Fas-mediated apoptosis.

It can be concluded from this study that HGV virus is circulating in the risk groups and in the community in general Yemen, and there is a possibility that this virus may at some time become epidemic if preventive measures are not applied.

Effect of GB virus C on response to antiretroviral therapy in HIV‐infected Brazilians *

To determine the effect of GBV‐C on ART, plasma samples taken from patients in a prospective randomized clinical trial of ART in HIV‐positive Brazilians were retrospectively analysed.
