Objective: To investigate the effect of Cordyceps sinensis (Bailing Capsule, fermented agent of C. sinensis) on renal function of patients with chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN). Methods: A total of 231 CAN patients who underwent transplantation between 2005 and 2008 and experienced chronic graft dysfunction were randomly divided into 2 groups. Patients in group A (n = 122) were treated with immunosuppressive agents and C. sinensis (2.0 g/day, 3 times a day), while patients in group B (n…

Figures and Tables from this paper

Cordyceps sinensis (a traditional Chinese medicine) for kidney transplant recipients.
TLDR
Although there were some favourable aspects associated with Cordyceps, longer-term studies are needed to clarify any benefit-harm trade-off and there was limited low quality evidence to suggest benefits in pulmonary infection, serum albumin, serum uric acid levels, CNI nephrotoxicity and hepatotoxicity.
Cordyceps sinensis protects against renal ischemia/reperfusion injury in rats
TLDR
It is concluded that CS protects against I/R injury via the SDF-1/CXCR4-signaling axis and alleviates senescence.
Herbs and Immunosuppressive Drugs: Calcineurin Inhibitors
The calcineurin-inhibiting drugs cyclosporine and tacrolimus are very commonly used in patients after organ transplantation, as well as in some patients with severe autoimmune diseases. However,
Effects of Bailing capsules for renal transplant recipients: a retrospective clinical study
TLDR
Bailing capsules were effective in preventing allograft rejection, protecting liver and kidney functions, stimulating hematopoiesis, and reducing the incidence of infection and thus are ideal immunoregulators.
Effects of Extract from Solid-State Fermented Cordyceps sinensis on Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
TLDR
Interestingly, CS treatment did not lead to obvious improvements in hyperglycemia or resistance to insulin, while in vitro MTT assays indicated that CS protects pancreatic beta cells against the toxic effects of STZ.
Cordyceps sinensis attenuates renal fibrosis and suppresses BAG3 induction in obstructed rat kidney.

TLDR
BAG3 is a potential target for the prevention and/or treatment of renal fibrosis, and C. sinensis is a promising agent for renal Fibrosis.
Cordyceps sinensis as an adjunctive treatment in kidney ransplant patients : A systematic-review and meta-analysis ee
Objectives: Cordyceps sinensis (cordyceps) is a fungus used in traditional Chinese medicine as adjuvant immunosuppressive agent in patients with kidney transplant. This review evaluates current
Promoting Plant-Based Therapies for Chronic Kidney Disease
TLDR
This review may prove to be a filtering tool to researchers into complementary and alternative medicines to find out the current trends of using plant-based therapies for the treatment of kidney diseases, including CKD.

TLDR
BLC could effectively prevent the reject response after renal transplantation, protect renal and liver function, stimulate hemopoietic function, improve hypoproteinemia and hyperlipidemia, reduce the infection, etc., therefore, it is an ideal immunosuppressor after organ transplantation.

Newer immunosuppression regimens, closer monitoring of the renal allograft and management of subclinical rejection may lead to reduced immune injury leading to CAN in the paediatric population but must be weighed against the risk of increased immunosppression and calcineurin inhibitor nephrotoxicity.
