We obtain, using semianalytical transfer operator techniques, the Edwards thermodynamics of a one-dimensional model of blocks connected by harmonic springs and subjected to dry friction. The theory is able to reproduce the linear divergence of the correlation length as a function of energy density observed in direct numerical simulations of the model under tapping dynamics. We further characterize analytically this divergence using a Gaussian approximation for the distribution of mechanically…

Theoretical approaches to the steady-state statistical physics of interacting dissipative units

- Physics

The aim of this review is to provide a concise overview of some of the generic approaches that have been developed to deal with the statistical description of large systems of interacting dissipative…

Long range correlations and slow time scales in a boundary driven granular model

- PhysicsScientific reports
- 2021

The crucial role of boundary driving for long-range correlations and slow time-scales is discussed, proposing an analogy between this simplified dynamical model and dense vibro-fluidized granular materials.

Statistical physics of frictional grains: some simple applications of Edwards statistics

- Physics
- 2022

Granular matter like sand is composed of a large number of interacting grains, and is thus expected to be amenable to a statistical physics treatment. Yet, the frictional properties of grains make…

Exact hyperuniformity exponents and entropy cusps in models of active-absorbing transition

- PhysicsEPL (Europhysics Letters)

Recent studies of nonequilibrium phase transitions have shown that in many systems which have transitions involving an arrested phase, the arrested states show suppressed density fluctuations and a…

Edwards Statistical Mechanics for Jammed Granular Matter

In 1989, Sir Sam Edwards made the visionary proposition to treat jammed granular materials using a volume ensemble of equiprobable jammed states in analogy to thermal equilibrium statistical…

Comment on "Thermal transport in dimerized harmonic lattices: Exact solution, crossover behavior, and extended reservoirs".

- PhysicsPhysical review. E

The notion of a tridiagonal 2-Toeplitz matrix and its spectrum is recalled, confronting these results with others obtained recently on exact solutions of thermal transport in dimerized harmonic lattices.
