Edmond Halley was born in 1656 at Haggerston outside of London and was educated at St Paul’s School, London and Queen’s College, Oxford. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1678. The following year Halley published a catalogue of the stars of the southern sky (the result of a year observing on the island of St Helena off the coast of South-West Africa).
