Ectoparasites of northern fulmars Fulmarus glacialis (Procellariiformes: Procellariidae) from the Canadian Arctic

We studied the prevalence and intensity of infestation of ectoparasites on northern fulmars (Fulmarus glacialis L.) from a breeding colony in Arctic Canada in June–August 2003. No fleas or ticks were found on any fulmars, but three species of chewing lice (Phthiraptera) were recorded: Ischnocera: Perineus nigrolimbatus (Giebel 1874), Ischnocera: Saemundssonia occidentalis (Kellogg 1896), and Amblycera: Ancistrona vagelli (Fabricius 1787). Non-breeding birds had a higher prevalence of lice than…

Prebasic molt initiation and progress in northern fulmars of the High Arctic: do molt and breeding overlap?

It was found that molt among breeders was delayed compared to molt in non- or failed breeders, and there was no evidence suggesting that fulmars shed primary feathers during breeding.
Nutrient dynamics and constraints on the pre-laying exodus of High Arctic northern fulmars
- Biology, Environmental Science
- 2008
It is hypothesized that female fulmars leave the colony before egg-laying to meet mineral demands for egg production, possibly focusing on calcium-rich prey, and that males use a different strategy for resource acquisition and allocation, which seeks to maximize fat and protein accumulation to meet forthcoming incubation demands.

Status and trends of terrestrial arthropod abundance and diversity in the North Atlantic region of the Arctic

It is found that a number of species and groups are in decline, mirroring patterns in other regions of the world, and emphasise that terrestrial arthropods require higher priority within future Arctic monitoring programmes.
Patterns of parasitism and body size in red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus)
- Biology
- 2008
Evidence of male-biased parasitism in helminth and ectoparasite infections is found and male fleas were more likely to be found on male squirrels, and this could be to maximize dispersal to avoid inbreeding.

Hematology and Absence of Hemoparasites in Breeding Common Terns (Sterna hirundo) from Cape Cod, Massachusetts
- BiologyJournal of zoo and wildlife medicine : official publication of the American Association of Zoo Veterinarians
- 2009
There were some significant differences among hematologic parameters in birds from different islands, and between birds nesting earlier versus later in the season, but there were no significant differences associated with body mass, sex, or age.
