Cockroach infestations have been indicated as a major contributor to asthma throughout the world. Several studies have shown that large numbers of asthmatic patients are sensitized to cockroach allergens. Eliminating this pest from homes, schools, and public buildings involves a long-term commitment to a rational extermination process. This article covers the characteristics of the major cockroach species that invade homes, assesses the role of environmental exposure to cockroaches in asthma…

Cockroach allergen biology and mitigation in the indoor environment.
TLDR
The current understanding of cockroach allergen biology and the demographics associated with human exposure and sensitization are reviewed, highlighting disparities between successful and failed attempts to lessen the cockroachAllergen burden in homes.
A Household Model of Cockroach Infestation and Its Effects on Atopic Asthma Symptoms
TLDR
A household model was developed to study the dynamics of cockroach infestation in a neighborhood of houses with individuals sensitized to the cockroach allergen and showed that it is more effective to prevent infestation of cockroaches, rather to attempt to removecockroaches once they have infested a house.
A Household Model of German Cockroach Infestations and Their Effects on Symptoms of Atopic Asthma
TLDR
A novel mathematical model is developed, with households as the model unit, to study the dynamics of cockroach infestations within a neighbourhood and how they impact the prevalence of asthma.

TLDR
This data indicates that among inner city children with asthma, exposure to cockroach allergen is associated with more severe disease and there has been little evaluation of educational approaches for controlling cockroach infestations and reducing allerGEN exposure.
Efficacy of Integrated Pest Management in Reducing Cockroach Allergen Concentrations in Urban Public Housing
TLDR
Intensive interventions can significantly reduce the allergen burden in public housing apartments, but intervention efforts must be sustained.

Sensitivity to the cockroach in three groups of allergic children.
TLDR
There is a definite tendency for allergic children exposed to cockroaches to develop positive skin tests and there is a suggestion that this sensitivity may play a role in perpetuating allergic symptoms in some children.

TLDR
The combination of cockroach allergy and exposure to high levels of this allergen may help explain the frequency of asthma-related health problems in inner-city children.

Background Sensitization and exposure to indoor allergens are the major risk factors for asthma. It is possible that significant exposure to domestic allergens occurs outside the home.
Evaluation of German cockroach (Orthoptera:Blattellidae) allergen and seasonal variation in low-income housing.
TLDR
Six apartments in a low-income housing project were evaluated for German cockroach and immunochemical assay of a major allergen in dust samples from the kitchen floor may be used to monitor exposure to German cockroaches, suggesting that cockroach levels may be use as an indicator or predictor of allerGEN in dust.
