Although rare, dinosaurs are well preserved in calcareous nodules of the Santana Formation (Early Cretaceous, ?Albian) of the Araripe Basin, in northeastern Brazil. So far, including only a spinosauroid and three coelurosaurs, the dinosaur fauna appears depauperate. High theropod diversity in assemblages where other dinosaurs are rare or absent is not unique to the Santana Formation. It is seen also in several other assemblages, including Solnhofen and the Maevarano Formation of Madagascar. We…

The results statistically favour the DIVALIKE+J and DEC+J models, supporting continental vicariance as an important factor in coelurosaurian evolution, and recognise the importance of Europe as a dispersal centre and gateway in the Early Cretaceous, as well as other vicarance events like those triggered by the disappearance of land-bridges.

Oxalaia quilombensis appears to be more closely related to the spinosaurids found in North Africa than to the Brazilian members of this clade and thus further increases the diversity of these enigmatic predatory dinosaurs in this country.

Feathered non-avian dinosaurs have not yet been described from the Crato Member, even though there are suggestions of their presence in nearby basins, and it is revealed that, despite the small sample size, they can be referred to coelurosaurian theropods.
