We present a method of analysing the correlated X-ray and optical/UV variability in X-ray binaries, using the observed time delays between the X-ray driving light curves and their reprocessed optical echoes. This allows us to determine the distribution of reprocessing sites within the binary. We model the time-delay transfer functions by simulating the distribution of reprocessing regions, using geometrical and binary parameters. We construct best-fitting time-delay transfer functions, showing… Expand

Multiwavelength observations of EXO 0748-676. I. Reprocessing of X-ray bursts
We present high time-resolution multiwavelength observations of X-ray bursts in the low-mass X-ray binary UY Vol. Strong reprocessed signals are present in the ultraviolet and optical, lagged andExpand
Correlated optical and X-ray variability in LMC X-2
We have obtained high time resolution (seconds) photometry of LMC X-2 in 1997 December, simultaneously with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE), in order to search for correlated X-ray and opticalExpand
First Search for an X-ray -- Optical Reverberation Signal in an Ultraluminous X-ray Source
Using simultaneous optical (VLT/FORS2) and X-ray (XMM-Newton) data of NGC 5408, we present the first ever attempt to search for a reverberation signal in an ultraluminous X-ray source (NGC 5408 X-1).Expand
Simultaneous optical and X-ray high-speed photometry of Cyg X-2
The X-ray emission from X-ray binaries may originate in flares occurring when magnetic loops anchored in the disc reconnect. In analogy with our Sun, Ha emission should arise as the acceleratedExpand
Optical/X-ray correlations during the V404 Cygni June 2015 outburst
Context. We present a multiwavelength analysis of the simultaneous optical and X-ray light curves of the microquasar V404 Cyg during the June 2015 outburst. Aims. We have performed a comprehensiveExpand
Parameters of irradiated accretion disks from optical and X-ray observations of GS 1826-238
We show that the set of observational characteristics for low-mass X-ray binaries in the optical and X-ray bands can be explained in terms of the model of an optically thick accretion disk with anExpand
A long-term optical-X-ray correlation in 4U 1957+11
Three years of optical monitoring of the low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) 4U 1957+11 is presented. The source was observed in V, R and i bands using the Faulkes Telescopes North and South. The lightExpand
Optical and X-ray correlations during the 2015 outburst of the black hole V404 Cyg
We present a serendipitous multiwavelength campaign of optical photometry simultaneous with Integral X-ray monitoring of the 2015 outburst of the black hole V404 Cyg. Large-amplitude opticalExpand
Reprocessing model for the optical quasi-periodic oscillations in black hole binaries
A number of black hole X-ray transients show quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the optical (ultraviolet) and X-ray bands at the same frequency, which challenge models for production of radiationExpand
A jet model for the fast IR variability of the black hole X-ray binary GX 339-4
Using the simultaneous Infra-Red (IR) and X-ray light curves obtained by Kalamkar et al., we perform a Fourier analysis of the IR/X-ray timing correlations of the black hole X-ray binary (BHB) GXExpand

Echoes from an irradiated disc in GRO J1655–40
We demonstrate correlated rapid variability between the optical/UV and X-ray emission for the first time in a soft X-ray transient, GRO J1655–40: Hubble Space Telescope (HST) light curves showExpand
Simultaneous optical and x-ray bursts from 4U/MXB 1636-53
We report the detection of five coincident optical/X-ray bursts from 4U/MXB 1636-53. The optical observations were made with the Danish 1.5 m telescope at the European Southern Observatory (E.S.O.)Expand
Delays of optical bursts in simultaneous optical and X-ray observations of MXB 1636-53
Observations of simultaneous optical and X-ray bursts from 4U/MXB 1636-53 were made using the Hakucho burst monitor system and optical telescopes at the European Southern Observatory during 1979 andExpand
Correlations between X-ray outbursts and relativistic ejections in the X-ray transient GRO J1655 – 40
ALTHOUGH objects that emit radio jets have been known for many years, the physical mechanism responsible for the jets has been unclear. Accretion of mass onto a compact object (such as a black hole)Expand
Simultaneous U, B, V, and X-ray measurements of a burst from 4U/MXB 1636-53
Data are presented on the first simultaneous X-ray and optical burst to be measured in more than one optical color. Various analyses agree that, to a first approximation, the optical burst isExpand
The 1996 outburst of GRO J1655-40 I: The challenge of interpreting the multi-wavelength spectra
We report on the results of a multiwavelength campaign to observe the soft X-ray transient (SXT) and superluminal jet source GRO J1655-40 in outburst using HSTRXTECGRO together with ground-basedExpand
