Current Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia (SAB) practice guidelines stratify treatment duration according to the likelihood of complications and recommend transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) in all cases. The benefit of TEE in uncomplicated SAB has not been validated. We performed a retrospective analysis of TEE and transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) among hospitalized adults with SAB in 3 prior observational studies (2002-2003, 2005-2006, and 2008-2009).
