Aims. We address the issue of the multiplicity of the three brightest early-type stars of the young open cluster IC 1805, namely HD 15570, HD 15629 and HD 15558. Methods. For the three stars, we measured the radial velocity by fitting Gaussian curves to line profiles in the optical domain. In the case of the massive binary HD 15558, we also used a spectral disentangling method to separate the spectra of the primary and of the secondary in order to derive the radial velocities of the two…
Early-type stars in the young open cluster NGC 2244 and in the Monoceros OB2 association. I. The mul
Aims. We present the results obtained from a long-term spectroscopic campaign devoted to the multiplicity of O-type stars in the young open cluster NGC 2244 and in the Mon OB2 association. Methods.
The massive star binary fraction in young open clusters – I. NGC 6231 revisited
We present the results of a long-term high-resolution spectroscopy campaign on the O-type stars in NGC 6231. We revise the spectral classification and multiplicity of these objects and we constrain
X-ray and optical spectroscopy of the massive young open cluster IC 1805
Context. Very young open clusters are ideal places to study the X-ray properties of a homogeneous population of early-type stars. In this respect, the IC 1805 open cluster is very interesting as it
The long-period, massive binaries HD 37366 and HD 54662 : Potential targets for long-baseline optical interferometry
We present the results from an optical spectroscopic analysis of the massive stars HD 37366 and HD 54662. We find that HD 37366 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 31.8187 ±
A spectroscopic investigation of early-type stars in the young open cluster Westerlund 2
Context. The distance of the very young open cluster Westerlund 2, which contains the very massive binary system WR 20a and is likely associated with a TeV source, has been the subject of much
A dearth of short-period massive binaries in the young massive star forming region M 17 - Evidence for a large orbital separation at birth?
Aims. The formation of massive stars remains poorly understood and little is known about their birth multiplicity properties. Here, we aim to quantitatively investigate the strikingly low
Spectroscopic Study of the Variability of Three Northern Of+ Supergiants
The transition from early Of stars to WN-type objects is poorly understood. O-type supergiants with emission lines (OIf+) are considered to be intermediate between these two classes. The scope of
Properties of Galactic early-type O-supergiants - A combined FUV-UV and optical analysis
We aim to constrain the properties and evolutionary status of early and mid-spectral type supergiants (from O4 to O7.5). These posses the highest mass-loss rates among the O stars, and exhibit
Binary-corrected velocity dispersions from single- and multi-epoch radial velocities: massive stars in R136 as a test case
Orbital motions from binary stars can broaden the observed line-of-sight velocity distribution of a stellar system, artificially inflating the measured line-of-sight velocity dispersion, which can in
A spectroscopic investigation of the O-type star population in four Cygnus OB associations I. Determination of the binary fraction
Context. Establishing the multiplicity of O-type stars is the first st ep towards accurately determining their stellar parameters. Moreover, the distribution of the orbital parameters provi des

High-mass binaries in the very young open cluster NGC 6231. Implication for cluster and star formation
New radial-velocity observations of 37 O- and B stars in the very young open cluster NGC 6231 confirm the high frequency of short-period spectroscopic binaries on the upper main sequence. Among the
Early-type stars in the young open cluster IC 1805 - I. The SB2 system BD$\mathsf{+60^{\circ}\,497}$ and the probably single stars BD$\mathsf{+60^{\circ}\,501}$ and BD$\mathsf{+60^{\circ}\,513}$
We investigate the multiplicity of three O-type stars in the very young open cluster IC 1805. All our targets were previously considered as spectroscopic binaries, but no orbital solution was
Binary and Multiple O-Type Stars in the Cassiopeia OB6 Association
We present the results of time-resolved spectroscopy of 13 O-type stars in the Cas OB6 stellar association. We conducted a survey for radial velocity variability in search of binary systems, which
The massive binary CPD 41 7742 I. High-resolution optical spectroscopy ?
We present the results of a spectroscopic campaign on the early-type binary CPD 41 7742. For the first time, we unambiguously detect the secondary's spectral signature and derive an accurate orbital
HD 15558 - an extremely luminous O-type binary star
An orbital solution for the single-line binary HD 15558, an O5f star in the association IC 1805, is presented. The period is 440d, the longest of any O-type spectroscopic binary, and e = 0.54. This
Star Formation in R136: A Cluster of O3 Stars Revealed by Hubble Space Telescope Spectroscopy*
The R136 cluster in 30 Doradus is the prototype super star cluster, and the only example sufficiently close that its massive star content can be studied directly. We have used the Hubble Space
A first detailed study of the colliding wind WR+O binary WR 30a
We present a detailed, extensive investigation of the photometric and spectroscopic behaviour of WR 30a. This star is definitely a binary system with a period around 4.6 d. We propose the value . The
The Initial Mass Function and Massive Star Evolution in the OB Associations of the Northern Milky Way
We investigate the massive star content of Milky Way clusters and OB associations in order to answer three questions: (1) How coeval is star formation? (2) How constant is the initial mass function
WR 20a Is an Eclipsing Binary: Accurate Determination of Parameters for an Extremely Massive Wolf-Rayet System
We present a high-precision I-band light curve for the Wolf-Rayet binary WR 20a, obtained as a subproject of the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment. Rauw et al. have recently presented
SPECTROSCOPIC OBSERVATIONS OF YOUNG OPEN CLUSTERS : IC 1805, NGC 654 AND NGC 6823
Spectroscopic observations were made for a sample of 263 stars from three young open clusters IC 1805, NGC 654 and NGC 6823 with CCD detectors in the blue and yellow-red spectral regions. MKK types
