Early emergence and seasonality of the Red-bellied Snake ( Storeria occipitomaculata ) along the Platte River in south-central Nebraska, USA
@inproceedings{Tye2017EarlyEA, title={Early emergence and seasonality of the Red-bellied Snake ( Storeria occipitomaculata ) along the Platte River in south-central Nebraska, USA}, author={Simon P. Tye and Keith Geluso and Mary J. Harner}, year={2017} }
The Red-bellied Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata) primarily inhabits moist woodlands of eastern North America, with two disjunct populations occurring in the Great Plains, one of which is in south-central Nebraska. This species is listed as at-risk in Nebraska, in part, due to being uncommon with limited information available about the ecology and natural history of this isolated population. We amassed 48 observations of Red-bellied Snakes in Nebraska from museum specimens and published…

Hibernacula had significantly more vegetation cover within 5 m, more leaf cover over the burrow entrance, and were closer to trees than were summer dens, and Pine snakes may select optimum temperatures at nearby random points.
Spring migration ecology of the mid-continent sandhill crane population with an emphasis on use of the Central Platte River Valley, Nebraska

The results suggest that as habitats of limited or no value to cranes increase on the landscape, more flight time and higher maintenance costs may reduce fat storage, as well as maintaining productive habitats on the wintering grounds to condition cranes for migration and reproduction.
