Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans produces a cytolytic peptide leukotoxin which kills susceptible target cells, including human neutrophils, monocytes, lymphocytes, and HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia cells. Cell death occurs as a consequence of colloid osmotic lysis.
