Introduction: At the time of core formation, the Earth’s silicate mantle was presumably in redoxequilibrium with the metallic iron core, which means—assuming an olivine composition of Mg# 0.9—about IW–2[1]. On the other hand, samples representative for the modern upper mantle such as abyssal peridotites or melts that originate in the upper mantle (MORB, OIB, IAB) are considerably more oxidized[2].
