The work reported in this monograph has clearly established the presence of peroxisome-like particles in lower and higher representatives of both major biological kingdoms. Such findings invite speculation on the phylogenetic history of these particles, especially since some of the characters of peroxisomes label them as “primitive”, in both the literal and the figurative sense of the word.
