VARIOUS METHODS OF CLASSIFYING ROCK ARE OUTLINED: CLASSIFICATION INTO THREE CLASSES - STABLE, SLIGHTLY COMPRESSIBLE, COMPRESSIBLE; CLASSIFICATION ACCORDING TO DURABILITY, AND CLASSIFICATION TAKING ACCOUNT OF EFFECTIVE SPAN. NONE OF THESE METHODS ARE SATISFACTORY. FOUR MAIN MAIN GROUPS OF ROCKS ARE INTRODUCED: STABLE, FRIABLE, COMPRESSIBLE AND COHESIONLESS. AN EXPLANATORY TABLE IS GIVEN FOR THE USE OF THESE GROUPS. THE EFFECT OF ANY WATER PRESENT IS ALSO CONSIDERED. /FG/RRL/
