Studies indicate that Th1 (IL-2, TNF-α and IFN-γ) cytokines reduce fibrosis in schistosomiasis, while Th2 (IL4, IL-5, IL6, IL10 and IL-13) plays a critical role in disease pathogenesis. The development of the Th2 response is dependent on IL-4, but studies have shown IL-13 as a mediator of fibrosis. Control mechanisms of IL-13 receptors are linked to this cytokine.
