Evasion of extracellular matrix detachment-induced apoptosis (‘anoikis’) is a defining characteristic of metastatic tumor cells. The ability of metastatic carcinoma cells to survive matrix detachment and escape anoikis enables them to disseminate as viable circulating tumor cells and seed distant organs.
