: The laryngeal mask airway is a new general purpose airway that has revolutionized anaesthetic practice and has a potential role in emergency airway management, including neonatal resuscitation. It fills a niche between the face mask and tracheal tube and sits in the hypopharynx where it forms a circumferential low pressure seal around the glottis. All doctors involved in emergency airway management should have an understanding of the device and acquire skills in its use.
