EFSA CONTAM Panel (EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain), 2015. Scientific Opinion on risks for public health related to the presence of chlorate in food
@inproceedings{Publication2015EFSACP, title={EFSA CONTAM Panel (EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain), 2015. Scientific Opinion on risks for public health related to the presence of chlorate in food}, author={Efsa Publication}, year={2015} }
Following a request from the European Commission, the risks to human health related to the presence of chlorate in food were assessed by the EFSA Panel on Contaminants in the Food Chain (CONTAM Panel). The presence of chlorate in food can arise from the use of chlorinated water for food processing and the disinfection of foodprocessing equipment. Inhibition of iodine uptake in humans was identified as the critical effect for chronic exposure to chlorate. A tolerable daily intake (TDI) of 3 μg…

Why chlorate occurs in potable water and processed foods: a critical assessment and challenges faced by the food industry
- Chemistry, MedicineFood additives & contaminants. Part A, Chemistry, analysis, control, exposure & risk assessment
- 2016
Chlorate data is collated on more than 3400 samples of mainly prepared foods, including dairy products, meats, fruits, vegetables and different food ingredients/additives, where 50.5% of the food samples contained chlorate above 0.01 mg kg–1, albeit not due to the use of chlorate as a pesticide but mainly due to its occurrence as an unavoidable disinfectant by-product.

Abstract
Recently, official food surveillance discovered high residues of chlorate (ClO3−) and perchlorate (ClO4−) in different plant-based foods, which was the start of a big discussion in the EU…

ABSTRACT Upon the European commission’s request in 2013, Denmark initiated a survey of the levels of chlorate and perchlorate in agriculture products from the Danish market over a period of 4 years…
The contamination and estimation of dietary intake for perchlorate and chlorate in infant formulas in China
- MedicineFood additives & contaminants. Part A, Chemistry, analysis, control, exposure & risk assessment
- 2021
The exposures of infant and young children to perchlorate from formulas were lower than the provisional maximum tolerable daily intake (PMTDI) and only for infants 0–6 month at the 95th percentile did exposures exceed the TDI of 3 μg/day for chlorate.

Normal variability of nutritional goitrogen uptake provides an obvious explanation for the variability in radioactive iodine uptake (RAIU) measurements observed in healthy individuals.
Distribution, Identification, and Quantification of Residues after Treatment of Ready-To-Eat Salami with 36Cl-Labeled or Nonlabeled Chlorine Dioxide Gas.

It is suggested that ClO2 is chemically reduced by salami and that slow-release formulations might be appropriate for applications involving the sanitation of ready-to-eat meat products.

Data indicate that broilers rapidly convert chlorate residues to an innocuous metabolite, chloride ion, and thatchlorate residues in excreta remain fairly high during the time around slaughter, which can be used to determine a likely risk/benefit ratio for chlorate.
