Certain of the new progestationally active steroids seem assured of rather widespread clinical use. Because of their anabolic properties, it may be assumed that males as well as females will receive these compounds. To determine what effect this class of steroids may have upon the male reproductive system, three of these steroids, 17a-ethyl-19-nortestosterone (Nilevar), 117a-ethynyl-19-nortestosterone (Norlutin), 1 and 17a-ethynyl-17hydroxyestren-3-one (Enovid) t were given orally to groups of… Expand

TLDR
Prospects of a male contraceptive depend upon the results of current work with the chlorohydrin group as seen in satisfactory evaluation of their toxicity in animal species and upon their effectiveness and safety in man. Expand
The Influence of Pharmaceutical Compounds on Male Fertility *
TLDR
Based on present knowledge, contraception in men could be principally managed by administration of a) androgens alone, b) gestagen/androgens combinations, c) estrogen/androgen combinations, d) certain antiandrogens. Expand
New Compounds with Progestational Activity: A Review
TLDR
The 19-nortestosterones (testosterone with a methyl group removed from the 19 position) are reviewed to summarize the pharmacological and physiological findings to date. Expand
Inhibition of spermatogenesis.
TLDR
The effect upon spermatogenesis of subdermal silastic capsules containing testosterone in combination with various oral drugs was studied in groups of subfertile men, finding changes in the blood levels of liver enzymes and an increased secretion of urobilinogen in the urine within the 1st weeks of treatment. Expand
Effect of chronic local administration of norethisterone enanthate on the testes of adult rat.
Silastic implants containing crystalline Norethisterone Enanthate (NE) inserted into the epididymal fat-pads unilaterally were found to bring about a drastic reduction (P smaller than 0.01) in theExpand
Intramuscular testosterone enanthate plus very low dosage oral levonorgestrel suppresses spermatogenesis without causing weight gain in normal young men: a randomized clinical trial.
TLDR
It is concluded that intramuscular T plus oral LNG has a very potent synergistic effect in suppressing spermatogenesis at LNG dosages equal to or lower than dosages used in common female oral contraceptive regimens and large, long-term contraceptive efficacy trials should be conducted with a variety of androgen-progestogen combinations. Effects of STS-557 and 20 Aet-1 on sperm functions and serum level of testosterone in bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata).
TLDR
Treatment of adult male bonnet monkeys with STS-557 reduced the sperm count from the 9th week, leading close to azoospermia on the 2nd post-treatment week which persisted until the 10th post- treatment week and normalcy was restored on the 13th post -treatment week. Expand
Male hormonal contraceptives: a potentially patentable and profitable product
TLDR
The latest developments in male hormonal contraception supporting the feasibility of such an agent will be reviewed, suggestions for future directions of research and development will be offered, and the need for a safe, effective, reversible and well-tolerated male hormonal contraceptive agent is addressed. Expand
Male hormonal contraception
TLDR
The latest developments in male hormonal contraception are discussed, including efforts at combining testosterone with other agents, such as progestogens or gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogues, to decrease the dosage of testosterone (and thus androgen-related side effects) while achieving uniform azoospermia. Expand
Effect of STS 557 on semen composition, fertility and sexual behaviour of male rabbits.
TLDR
Development of male contraceptives on the basis of chronic progestin treatment without concomitant androgen supplement may thus be possible. Expand

TLDR
It is important to learn whether urinary gonadotrophin titers accurately reflect the dynamics of spermatogenesis, to ascertain which hypothesis has the greater applicability in aberrations of s permatogenesis in the human male. Expand
