The outstanding Czechoslovak geometer and topologist Eduard Cech was born in 1893 in Strachov in northwestern Bohemia. In 1912, while still a student at the Charles University, he began a systematic study of mathematical literature of his own choice, giving preference to the various branches of geometry.
