Although human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA is detected in the majority of squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the uterine cervix, the persistence and progression of cervical lesions suggest that viral antigens are not adequately presented to the immune system.
