The text of lectures to the 2011 Tenerife Winter School. The School's theme was "Secular Evolution of Galaxies" and my task was to present the underlying stellar-dynamical theory. Other lecturers were speaking on the role of bars and chemical evolution, so these topics are avoided here. We start with an account of the connections between isolating integrals, quasiperiodicity and angle-action variables - these variables played a unifying role throughout the lectures. This leads on to the…
Dynamics for galactic archaeology
Abstract Our Galaxy is a complex machine in which several processes operate simultaneously: metal-poor gas is accreted, is chemically enriched by dying stars, and then drifts inwards, surrendering
The Baryon Cycle at High Redshifts: Effects of Galactic Winds on Galaxy Evolution in Overdense and Average Regions
We employ high-resolution cosmological zoom-in simulations focusing on a high-sigma peak and an average cosmological field at $z\sim 6-12$, in order to investigate the influence of environment and
Torus mapper: a code for dynamical models of galaxies
We present a freely downloadable software package for modelling the dynamics of galaxies, which we call the Torus Mapper (TM). The package is based around `torus mapping', which is a non-perturbative
Galaxy Zoo:observing secular evolution through bars
In this paper, we use the Galaxy Zoo 2 data set to study the behavior of bars in disk galaxies as a function of specific star formation rate (SSFR) and bulge prominence. Our sample consists of 13,295
The effects of the initial mass function on the chemical evolution of elliptical galaxies
We describe the use of our chemical evolution model to reproduce the abundance patterns observed in a catalog of elliptical galaxies from the SDSS DR4. The model assumes ellipticals form by fast gas
Galaxy structural analysis with the curvature of the brightness profile
In this work, we introduce the curvature of a galaxy brightness profile to identify its structural subcomponents in a non-parametrically fashion. Bulges, bars, discs, lens, rings, and spiral arms
A CRITICAL LOOK AT THE MASS-METALLICITY-STAR FORMATION RATE RELATION IN THE LOCAL UNIVERSE. I. AN IMPROVED ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK AND CONFOUNDING SYSTEMATICS
It has been proposed that the (stellar) mass-(gas) metallicity relation of galaxies exhibits a secondary dependence on star formation rate (SFR), and that the resulting Stellar Mass-Z-SFR relation
Constraints on the Minor Merging and Star Formation History of the Wolf-Rayet Galaxy NGC 5430 Through Observations
We used multi-wavelength analysis of the newly observed molecular gas (12CO and 13CO (1-0)) with interferometer CARMA and archival star formation tracers to constrain the interaction, merging, and
Actions for axisymmetric potentials
We give an algorithm for the economical calculation of angles and actions for stars in axisymmetric potentials. We test the algorithm by integrating orbits in a realistic model of the Galactic
VLT/X-Shooter Spectroscopy of Lyman Break Analogs: Direct-method O/H Abundances and Nitrogen Enhancements
We used VLT/XShooter to target a sample of nearby analogs of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). These Lyman Break Analogs (LBAs) are similar to the LBGs in many of their physical properties. We determine

Dynamical Evolution of Disk Galaxies
We now believe disk galaxies to be rapidly evolving objects. My aim here is to sketch a few of the main mechanisms that must have caused galaxies to change since their formation and to question
