Dynamics of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change in Tropical Regions

  title={Dynamics of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change in Tropical Regions},
author={Eric F. Lambin and Helmut J. Geist and Erika Lepers},
We highlight the complexity of land-use/cover change and propose a framework for a more general understanding of the issue, with emphasis on tropical regions. The review summarizes recent estimates on changes in cropland, agricultural intensification, tropical deforestation, pasture expansion, and urbanization and identifies the still unmeasured land-cover changes. Climate-driven land-cover modifications interact with land-use changes. Land-use change is driven by synergetic factor combinations…

Socio-environmental impacts of land use and land cover change at a tropical forest frontier

Land use and land cover change, especially in tropical regions, have received much attention in recent years. Land use dynamics are usually caused by a combination of large scale drivers of change

Land use and land cover change and its implications in Kagera river basin, East Africa

The Kagera basin has experienced major land use/cover changes in tropical forests, woodlands, and savannas due to the incessant conversion of land to agricultural and settlement use. While the land

Agriculture, climate and future land use patterns: potential for a simulation-based exploration

The unprecedented rate of land cover conversion and changes in land management provides a major challenge to policy makers. Land Use and Land Cover change (LUCC) does not only change the landscapes

Population Growth and Land Use Land Cover Change Scenario in Ethiopia

Land use and land cover change (LULC) is widespread, accelerating, and significant processes driven by human actions but also producing changes that impact humans. These changes can alter the

An Analysis of Land-Use Change and Grassland Degradation from a Policy Perspective in Inner Mongolia, China, 1990–2015

Land-use and land-cover changes have important effects on ecology, human systems, the environment, and policy at both global and regional scales. Thus, they are closely related to human activities.

Assessment of Land-Use and Land-Cover Change in Guangxi, China

The results show that a total of 4708 km2 changed in Guangxi from 1990 to 2017, while 418 km2 of woodland has been lost in this region, and steep slope cropland was one of the major conversion patterns of afforestation after 2000.

Anthropogenic Land Use and Land Cover Changes—A Review on Its Environmental Consequences and Climate Change

The global demand for food and bioenergy changes associated with land use and land cover change (LULCC) has raised concerns about the environment, global warming, and climate change. There is enough

An integrative approach to modeling land-use changes: multiple facets of agriculture in the Upper Yangtze basin

Land change science has emerged as a fundamental component of global environmental change and sustainability research. Still, much remains to be learned before scientists can fully assess future

Predicting land-use change

Land cover change over the last three centuries due to human activities: The availability of new global data sets

Land use and land cover change is an important driver of global change (Turner et al., 1993). It is recognized that land use change has important consequences for global and regional climates, the

The Influence of Land Use Change on Climate in the Sahel

A number of general circulation model (GCM) experiments have shown that changes in vegetation in the Sahel can cause substantial reductions in rainfall. In some studies, the climate sensitivity is

Land-Cover-Change Trajectories in Southern Cameroon

The objective of this study is to better understand the complexity of deforestation processes in southern Cameroon by testing a multivariate, spatial model of land-cover change trajectories

Land Use and Land Cover Change in Forest Frontiers: The Role of Household Life Cycles

Tropical deforestation remains a critical issue given its present rate and a widespread consensus regarding its implications for the global carbon cycle and biodiversity. Nowhere is the problem more

Multi‐factorial causes of land‐use change: land‐use dynamics in the agropastoral village of Im Mial, northwestern Syria

Land‐use dynamics in drylands are complex processes. In the context of a typical agropastoral village in northwestern Syria Im Mial, the effects of demographic and social changes, reduced soil
