We answer the long-standing question of which production mechanism is responsible for the cataclysmic variables (CVs) in globular clusters. Arguments have been given that range from mostly primordial presence to a significant contribution of later dynamical formation in close stellar encounters. We conclude, based on a thorough analysis of a homogeneous Chandra data set, that the majority of CVs in dense globular clusters have a dynamical origin.

Are most Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters dynamically formed?
Abstract We have been investigating populations of cataclysmic variables (CVs) in a set of more than 300 globular cluster (GC) models evolved with themoccacode.[-120pt] One of the main questions we
Neutron Stars in Globular Clusters
Abstract Dynamical interactions that occur between objects in dense stellar systems are particularly important for the question of formation of X-ray binaries. We present results of numerical
Properties of Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters
The study of star clusters plays an important role in our understanding of the Universe since these systems are natural laboratories for testing theories of stellar dynamics and evolution.

Abstract The formation of special binaries in a globular cluster is regulated by the total encounter rate γ in the cluster, but their life expectancy by the number of encounters γ that one system
Dynamical Formation of Cataclysmic Variables in Globular Clusters
The formation and evolution of X-ray sources in globular clusters is likely to be affected by the cluster internal dynamics and the stellar interactions in the cluster dense environment.Several
XMM-Newton and Chandra Observations of Neutron Stars and Cataclysmic Variables in the Globular Cluster NGC 2808
Abstract We report on XMM-Newton and Chandra observations of the globular cluster NGC 2808. We detect one quiescent low mass X-ray binary of the 3±1 expected, if these systems are formed through
Formation and evolution of compact binaries in globular clusters – II. Binaries with neutron stars
In this paper, the second of a series, we study the stellar dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing neutron stars (NSs) in dense globular
Formation and evolution of compact binaries in globular clusters - I. Binaries with white dwarfs
In this paper, the first of a series, we study the stellar dynamical and evolutionary processes leading to the formation of compact binaries containing white dwarfs (WDs) in dense globular clusters

Abstract In this paper I present an overview of the main observational properties of a special class of exotic objects (the so-called Blue Straggler Stars, BSSs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs).
Observational Evidence for the Origin of X-ray Sources in Globular Clusters
Abstract Low-mass X-ray binaries, recycled pulsars, cataclysmic variables and magnetically active binaries are observed as X-ray sources in globular clusters. We discuss the classification of these

Predictions of a population of cataclysmic variables in globular clusters
We have studied the number of cataclysmic variables (CVs) that should be active in globular clusters during the present epoch as a result of binary formation via two-body tidal capture. We predict
X-ray binaries in globular clusters
It appears to be very unlikely that primordial binaries in globular clusters have evolved to produce high-luminosity X-ray sources like the four variable sources detected in observations by the Uhuru
Dynamical Formation of Close Binary Systems in Globular Clusters
We know from observations that globular clusters are very efficient catalysts in forming unusual short-period binary systems or their offspring, such as low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs; neutron stars
A Catalog of Parameters for Globular Clusters in the Milky Way
A database of parameters for globular star clusters in the Milky Way is described which is available in electronic form through the WorldWideWeb. The information in the catalog includes up-to-date
White dwarfs and neutron stars in globular cluster X-ray sources
We predict here that globular clusters contain at least as many cataclysmic variables, which contain white dwarfs, as bright (Lx>1036 erg s−1) X-ray sources, which contain neutron stars. Globular
Star clusters as Type Ia supernova factories
We find a remarkably enhanced production rate in star clusters (relative to the field) of very short-period, massive double white dwarf stars and of giant-white dwarf binaries. These results are
Discovery of a quiescent neutron star binary in the globular cluster M 13
We have discovered with XMM-Newton an X-ray source in the core of the globular cluster M 13, whose X-ray spectral properties suggest that it is a quiescent neutron star X-ray binary. The spectrum can
Classical novae (CNe) are the brightest manifestation of mass transfer onto a white dwarf (WD) in a cataclysmic variable (CV). As such, they are probes of the mass transfer rate, , and WD mass, MWD,
We have detected 300 X-ray sources within the half-mass radius (279) of the globular cluster 47 Tucanae in a deep (281 ks) Chandra exposure. We perform photometry and simple spectral fitting for our
Short gamma-ray bursts from binary neutron star mergers in globular clusters
Observations by the Swift gamma-ray-burst (GRB) mission located short GRBs in (or near) elliptical galaxies, that are no longer active in star formation. This suggested that short GRBs are produced
