BACKGROUND Sarcolemmal Na/Ca exchange (NCX) regulates cardiac Ca and contractility. NCX function during the cardiac cycle is determined by intracellular [Ca] and [Na] ([Ca]i, and [Na]i) and membrane potential (Em), which all change in human heart failure (HF).
