The occurrence of a negative dynamic mass density is a striking property of metamaterials. It appears when an inner local resonance is present. Results coming from an asymptotic theory are recalled briefly, showing the scaling of physical properties leading to inner resonance in elastic composites containing homogeneous soft inclusions, with negligible scattering of waves traveling through the matrix. This appears for a large contrast of elastic properties between matrix and inclusion. The…

Inner Resonance in Media Governed by Hyperbolic and Parabolic Dynamic Equations. Principle and Examples
TLDR
The aim of this chapter is to provide a synthetic picture of the inner resonance phenomena by means of the asymptotic homogenization method (Sanchez-Palencia, 1980) and discloses the common principle and the specific features of different inner resonance situations and points out their consequences on the effective behavior.
Generalized analytic model for rotational and anisotropic metasolids
An analytical approach is presented to model a metasolid accounting for anisotropic effects and rotational mode. The metasolid is made of either cylindrical or spherical hard inclusions embedded in a
Locally Resonant Materials for Energy Harvesting at Small Scale
This paper aims to report and analyze the possibility of focusing the mechanical energy carried by anti-plane shear waves, localizing it inside a resonant cavity. The transmission through a pair of

Effective Dynamic Mass Density of Composites
The static mass density of a composite is simply the volume average of its constituents’ densities. The dynamic density of a composite is defined to be the quantity that enters in evaluating the
Low frequency locally resonant metamaterials containing composite inclusions.
TLDR
The resonance frequencies and dynamic mass densities are obtained in a closed form for materials containing cylindrical composite fibers or spherical composite inclusions, after solving the related boundary value elasticity problems.
Analytic model of elastic metamaterials with local resonances
A unified analytic model for effective mass density, effective bulk modulus, and effective shear modulus is presented for elastic metamaterials composed of coated spheres embedded in a host matrix.
Locally resonant acoustic metamaterials with 2D anisotropic effective mass density
A two-dimensional (2D) lattice model with anisotropic resonant microstructures is found to provide an anisotropic band gap structure. A 2D continuum with anisotropic effective mass density is
Determination of effective mass density and modulus for resonant metamaterials.
TLDR
The proposed method provides a consistent approach for evaluating the effective parameters of resonant metamaterials using a small number of vibration measurements.
Homogenization of periodic elastic composites and locally resonant sonic materials
A method for homogenization of an elastic composite with periodic microstructure is presented. It is shown that the resulting homogenized frequency-dependent elasticity and mass-density automatically
