It is proposed that in the gustatory system there exist separate sensory and hedonic (reward-aversion) representations in each of the primary structures in which processing of gustatory stimuli occurs. Anatomical and physiological data are used to determine putative separate sensory and hedonic representations in the nucleus of the solitary tract, parabrachial complex, gustatory thalamus, and cortical gustatory areas.
