Breastfeeding provides important benefits to mother and infant and should be strongly encouraged as the optimal infant feeding choice for most infants. In assessing the impact of maternal medication on breastfeeding, the clinician must always weigh the many benefits of breastfeeding for the mother and infant against the risk of exposing the infant to the drug as it appears in breast milk.
