A data-based mathematical model was formulated to assess the epidemiological consequences of heterosexual, intravenous drug use (IVDU) and perinatal transmission in New York City (NYC). The model was analysed to clarify the relationship between heterosexual and IVDU transmission and to provide qualitative and quantitative insights into the HIV epidemic in NYC. The results demonstrated the significance of the dynamic interaction of heterosexual and IVDU transmission. Scenario analysis of the…

The epidemic dynamics of HIV-1 in Italy: modelling the interaction between intravenous drug users and heterosexual population.
TLDR
The qualitative features of the Italian epidemic are well represented by the model, which highlights the role of IVDUs as an infection reservoir, however, the need emerges for more accurate information on the key parameters influencing the transmission dynamics of HIV-1.
Factors controlling the spread of HIV in heterosexual communities in developing countries: patterns of mixing between different age and sexual activity classes.

TLDR
The principle conclusion of the study is that the pattern of mixing between age and sexual activity classes have a very major influence on the predicted pattern of HIV spread and the demographic impact of AIDS.
Epidemiology, HIV and drugs: mathematical models and data.
The utility of mathematical models in understanding the dynamics of HIV transmission among injecting drug users (IDUs) and their non-IDU sex partners is discussed. We emphasize the need for
Mathematical Models of the Transmission Dynamics of Human Immunodeficiency Virus in England and Wales: Mixing between Different Risk Groups
TLDR
Transmission models are shown to be of greatest value as tools to highlight needs for data for accurate projection and as a template for assessing the relative contribution of various factors to future trends in the incidence of AIDS.
Modeling the transmission dynamics of HIV/AIDS epidemics: an introduction and a review.
INTRODUCTION One of the greatest causes of morbidity and mortality in the Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly among young adults is HIV/AIDS. Many Mathematical models have been suggested for describing
Assessing the Potential Impact of Hormonal-Based Contraceptives on HIV Transmission Dynamics Among Heterosexuals
TLDR
If proven, HC use may potentially explain the inordinate spread of HIV within the sub-Saharan Africa region and therefore compel for urgent assessment with a view to reorienting birth control methods in use in settings with generalised epidemics.
Exploratory data analysis of three sexual behaviour surveys: implications for HIV-1 transmission in the U.K.

  • 1993
TLDR
The analysis suggests that it is possible that a heterosexually transmitted HIV-1 epidemic could occur in the U.K.

A preliminary study of the transmission dynamics of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS.
TLDR
Preliminary attempts to formulate simple mathematical models of the transmission dynamics of HIV infection in homosexual communities are described, and the influence of variation in the incubation period and heterogeneity in sexual activity is assessed.

TLDR
Drug use appears to be the main source for any future heterosexual epidemic in the United States, and in Europe 14% of cases of AIDS are in intravenous drug users, and the proportion is rising rapidly.
A model-based estimate of the mean incubation period for AIDS in homosexual men.
TLDR
A model for the proportion likely to develop AIDS and the incubation period for AIDS in homosexual men could be derived and is close to the estimate of 8.2 years for adults developing transfusion-associated AIDS.
HIV infection among persons who inject illicit drugs: problems and prospects.
TLDR
Preliminary studies from New York City, San Francisco, and Stockholm indicate a relative stabilization of seroprevalence in these cities, suggesting that the behavior changes reported in those cities may be significantly slowing the rate of viral spread.

TLDR
The projected dimensions of the AIDS epidemic among intravenous drug abusers in New York City and its implications for hospital utilization and local health care expenditures indicate the urgent need for a rapid expansion of addiction treatment services and modification of treatment objectives to deal with this new problem.
Risk factors for male to female transmission of HIV. European Study Group.
TLDR
The risk of sexual transmission of HIV from an infected man to his female partner varies considerably according to the characteristics of the couple, and the differences in rates of transmission in high risk groups may be considerably reduced if the risk factors are taken into account during individual and public health counselling.
Risk of developing AIDS in HIV-infected cohorts of hemophilic and homosexual men.
TLDR
The results suggest that currently the relative length of human immunodeficiency virus infection is of primary importance in comparing disease outcome for different populations.
The epidemiology of HIV infection in children and their mothers--vertical transmission.
TLDR
A review of vertical transmission of HIV infection from mothers to infants emphasizes methodological aspects of diagnosis and study and includes all available information up to June 1990, with great need for standard protocols an international database and collaboration on this issue.
HIV-1 Infection Among Intravenous Drug Users in Manhattan, New York City, From 1977 Through 1987
TLDR
Seroprevalence rates among intravenous drug users in the borough of Manhattan stabilized between 55% and 60% from 1984 through 1987; this relatively constant rate is attributed to new infections, new seronegative persons beginning drug injection, seropositive persons leaving drug injection and increasing conscious risk reduction.
