Drought resistance is being increasingly labelled as being a 'complex trait', especially with the recent expansion of research into its genomics. There is a danger that this label may turn into an axiom that is liable to damage education on the subject as well as research and the delivery of solutions to the farmer. This opinionated review examines whether there is grounds for such an axiom. Drought resistance is labelled as a 'complex trait' mainly when viewed by molecular biologists from the…

TLDR
Possible reasons for the limited impact of genomics on the delivery of drought-resistant cultivars are discussed, mainly tied to scientific and methodological problems in drought stress gene expression work and the functional genomics protocols used to identify drought resistance.
A Physio-Morphological Trait-Based Approach for Breeding Drought Tolerant Wheat
TLDR
There is a need for comprehensive high throughput phenotyping of physio-morphological traits that is growth stage-based to improve the efficiency of breeding drought-tolerant wheat.
Coping with drought: stress and adaptive responses in potato and perspectives for improvement
TLDR
An overview of past research activity on drought tolerance in potato is presented, highlighting recent advances with examples from other crops and suggesting future research directions.
Drought stress adaptation: metabolic adjustment and regulation of gene expression
TLDR
Crop plants show various adaptive and acclimatization strategies to drought stress, which range from seemingly simple morphological or physiological traits that serve as important stress tolerance markers to major upheavals in gene expression in which a large number of transcription factors are induced.
The Physiology of Reproductive-Stage Abiotic Stress Tolerance in Cereals
TLDR
The high sensitivity of the young microspore stage of pollen development was used as a target for the screening method, enabling it to identify germplasm with higher resilience to cold (rice) and drought (wheat).
Drought Stress Responses in Soybean Roots and Nodules
TLDR
It is concluded that the direct screening of root and nodule traits in the field as well as identification of genes, proteins and also metabolites involved in such traits will be essential in order to gain a better understanding of the regulation of root architecture, bacteroid development and lifespan in relation to drought tolerance in soybean.
Abiotic Stress in Plants: Socio-Economic Consequences and Crops Responses
TLDR
Its intertwined nature has been the subject of plenty of biological studies to reach a reliable realization of these processes, since this is the safe approach to inject this understanding into selection and breeding programs to create superior cultivars that make a human capacity to provide food to an ever-increasing population on the earth.
Drought tolerance strategies highlighted by two Sorghum bicolor races in a dry-down experiment.
Improvement of Drought Tolerance in Rice (Oryza sativa L.): Genetics, Genomic Tools, and the WRKY Gene Family
TLDR
The newest advances in plant physiology for the exact phenotyping of plant responses to drought are discussed, including the interaction of plant phenology and multiple stresses, and the combination of drought tolerance traits with different genetic and genomics approaches.
Breeding for Enhanced Drought Resistance in Barley and Wheat - Drought-associated Traits, Genetic Resources and their Potential Utilization in Breeding Programmes
TLDR
Recent results of the breeding of barley and wheat for improved resistance to drought stress are summarized and the future approaches to breeding for enhanced drought resistance as a complex physiological and agronomical trait are outlined.

TLDR
A variety of plant phenomics approaches to identify these plants and the genes responsible, based on detailed physiological knowledge of C4 photosynthesis are described, including strategies to asses the physiological effects of the installation of components of the C4 pathway in rice.
Photosynthesis and drought: can we make metabolic connections from available data?
TLDR
This analysis shows the interplay of sugars, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and hormones with photosynthetic responses to drought, involving many metabolic events, and highlights how fragmented and often non-comparable the results are.

TLDR
The challenge for breeders will be to efficiently integrate trait-based and molecular methods to increase yield in dry and saline environments.
Long-distance ABA Signaling and Its Relation to Other Signaling Pathways in the Detection of Soil Drying and the Mediation of the Plant’s Response to Drought
TLDR
Evidence is reviewed for a variety of long-distance signaling pathways involving hormones and nutrient ions moving in the xylem sap that allow regulation of plant growth, development and functioning, and particularly shoot water status, as distinct from stress lesions in growth and other processes as a reaction to perturbations such as soil drying.

Time of day shapes Arabidopsis drought transcriptomes.
TLDR
Comparative analyses support the hypothesis that the drought-responsive transcriptomes were shaped by invocation of distinct hormonal and stress response pathways at different times of the day, and highlight the value of characterising multiple time-of-day-specific drought transcriptomes.

TLDR
Plant Breeding for Water-Limited Environments is an excellent attempt to discuss a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise regarding drought determinants at physiological, biochemical, and genetic levels, and the latest technologies to manipulate these determinants for better crop/plant performance.
