When a droplet is generated, the ligament connecting the drop to the nozzle thins down and eventually pinches off. Adding solid particles to the liquid phase leads to a more complex dynamic, notably by increasing the shear viscosity. Moreover, it introduces an additional length scale to the system, the diameter of the particles, which eventually becomes comparable to the diameter of the ligament. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the thinning and pinch-off of drops of suspensions…

Pinch-off of viscoelastic particulate suspensions

The formation of drops of a complex fluid, for instance including dissolved polymers and/or solid particles, has practical implications in several industrial and biophysical processes. In this

Dip coating of bidisperse particulate suspensions

Abstract Dip coating consists of withdrawing a substrate from a bath to coat it with a thin liquid layer. This process is well understood for homogeneous fluids, but heterogeneities, such as

Particulate suspension coating of capillary tubes.

The displacement of a suspension of particles by an immiscible fluid in a capillary tube or in porous media is a canonical configuration that finds application in a large number of natural and

Pinch-off of viscoelastic particulate suspensions

The formation of drops of a complex fluid, for instance including dissolved polymers and/or solid particles, has practical implications in several industrial and biophysical processes. In this

Particles accelerate the detachment of viscous liquids

During detachment of a viscous fluid extruded from a nozzle, a filament linking the droplet to the latter is formed. Under the effect of surface tension, the filament thins until pinch-off and final

Capillary breakup of suspensions near pinch-off

We present new findings on how the presence of particles alters the pinch-off dynamics of a liquid bridge. For moderate concentrations, suspensions initially behave as a viscous liquid with dynamics

Droplet formation and scaling in dense suspensions

It is argued that this scaling is a consequence of particles deforming the neck surface, thereby creating a pressure that is balanced by inertia, and how it emerges from topological constraints that relate particle configurations with macroscopic Gaussian curvature.

Dip-coating of suspensions.

This article studies the Landau-Levich problem in the case of a suspension of non-Brownian particles at moderate volume fraction 10% < φ < 41%.

Modelling capillary break-up of particulate suspensions

We have constructed a simple one-dimensional model of capillary break-up to demonstrate the thinning behaviour of particulate suspensions previously observed in experiments. The presence of particles

An experimental study of particle effects on drop formation

The formation of drops of particulate suspensions composed of spherical, neutrally buoyant, noncolloidal particles in a viscous liquid is examined experimentally. The suspensions are investigated

The effects of particle size on the mechanisms of atomization of suspensions using hydraulic spray nozzles

A study of the effects of particles on the manner in which sheets of aqueous suspensions wetted particles disintegrate during atomization by hydraulic pressure nozzle showed that the sheet stability

Accelerated drop detachment in granular suspensions

We experimentally study the detachment of drops of granular suspensions using a density matched model suspension with varying grain volume fraction (ϕ = 15% to 55%) and grain diameter (d = 20 μm to

Spreading and fragmentation of particle-laden liquid sheets

The fragmentation of liquid sheets produces a collection of droplets. The size distribution of the droplets has a considerable impact on the coating efficiency of sprays and the transport of
