Results are reported of an experimental investigation into the motion of a heavy cylinder free to move inside a water-filled drum rotating around its horizontal axis. The cylinder is observed to either co-rotate or, counter-intuitively, counter-rotate with respect to the rotating drum. The flow was measured with particle image velocimetry, and it was found that the inner cylinder significantly altered the bulk flow field from the solid-body rotation found for a fluid-filled drum. In the counter… Expand
Motion of a free cylinder inside a rotating water-filled drum
We report experimental results on the motion and levitation of a freely to-move heavy cylinder, of constant diameter and varying mass, inside a water-filled drum rotating around its horizontal axis.Expand
Shear-induced autorotation of freely rotatable cylinder in a channel flow at moderate Reynolds number

Influence of the static field on a heavy body in a rotating drum with liquid
In the suspension regime and the partial repulsion regime, which precedes it, the body performs auto-oscillations that resemble the precession and the flow structures near the suspended cylinder are studied using the PIV method. Expand

The Twente turbulent Taylor-Couette (T3C) facility: strongly turbulent (multiphase) flow between two independently rotating cylinders.
The system allows study of both Taylor-Couette flow in a high-Reynolds-number regime, and the mechanisms behind skin-friction drag alterations due to bubble injection, polymer injection, and surface hydrophobicity and roughness. Expand
Highly Turbulent Taylor-Couette Flow
The research issues addressed in this mostly experimental thesis concern highly turbulent Taylor-Couette (TC) flow (Re>105, implying Ta>1011). We study it on a fundamental level to aid ourExpand
