In a recent study, it was found that the intrastriatal administration to rats of the organophosphorous compound soman and kainic acid produced a rapid release not only of glutamate but also of dopamine in this brain region. Dopamine is a potent source of free radicals and is known to produce cytotoxic effects, per se.
