The hippocampal formation is thought to contribute to both addictive behaviors and to psychotic disorders, and the actions of the neurotransmitter dopamine are intimately involved with these disease states. We have used both whole-cell and extracellular recording techniques in hippocampal slices to investigate the actions of both cocaine and dopamine receptor agonists in the CA1 region. In the presence of cocaine (10 μM), endogenously released dopamine decreased monosynaptic inhibitory…

Dopamine transporter blockade increases LTP in the CA1 region of the rat hippocampus via activation of the D3 dopamine receptor.
TLDR
The results suggest that either endogenously released dopamine (facilitated by DAT blockade) or exogenously applied dopamine agonist can act to increase LTP in the CA1 of the hippocampus via activation of the D3 subtype of dopamine receptor.
Pramipexole restores depressed transmission in the ventral hippocampus following MPTP-lesion
TLDR
The role of dopamine on hippocampal long term potentiation using D-amphetamine, which stimulates dopamine release, and how a dopaminergic lesion affects the synaptic transmission across the anatomic subdivisions of the hippocampus are investigated to suggest a new mechanism to explain some of the actions of pramipexole in Parkinson's disease.
Postsynaptic dopamine D3 receptor modulation of evoked IPSCs via GABAA receptor endocytosis in rat hippocampus
TLDR
The activation of D3 receptors can modulate GABAA receptor endocytosis in the hippocampus in a lamina specific manner, and thereby alter the efficacy of GABAergic transmission in the stratum radiatum of the CA1 region through a postsynaptic mechanism of action.
Selective blockade of dopamine D3 versus D2 receptors enhances frontocortical cholinergic transmission and social memory in rats: a parallel neurochemical and behavioural analysis
TLDR
Selective blockade of D3 receptors facilitates frontocortical cholinergic transmission and improves social memory in rats, and support the pertinence of D 3 receptors as a target for treatment of disorders in which cognitive function is compromised.
Effects of cocaine on D2 and D3 dopamine receptor expression and function in the rat brain
TLDR
The potency of D2/D3 receptor agonist was highest in dorsal striatum and the potency of receptor activity was more correlated with D2 receptor gene expression than D3 receptor expression, and Cocaine did not show any convincing effect on D2 and D3 receptors function and gene expression.
Dopamine D3-Like Receptors Modulate Anxiety-Like Behavior and Regulate GABAergic Transmission in the Rat Lateral/Basolateral Amygdala
TLDR
The data strongly suggest that DA, potentially acting through D3-like receptors, may suppress the relative contribution by inhibitory processes in the BLA and modify the expression of BLA-related behaviors.
D(2)-like dopamine receptors differentially regulate unitary IPSCs depending on presynaptic GABAergic neuron subtypes in rat nucleus accumbens shell.
TLDR
Results suggest that activation of D(2)-like receptors facilitates outputs from MS neurons in the NAc by reducing lateral inhibition during a dormant period of FS neuron activities.
The Nucleus Reuniens of the Midline Thalamus Gates Prefrontal-Hippocampal Modulation of Ventral Tegmental Area Dopamine Neuron Activity
TLDR
In vivo electrophysiological and behavioral approaches in rats show that the nucleus reuniens of the midline thalamus gates mPFC control of VTA DA neuron firing by the hippocampus, and suggest that dysfunction in these regions likely influences the pathophysiology of psychiatric disorders.

Dopamine D3 Receptor Antagonism Inhibits Cocaine-Seeking and Cocaine-Enhanced Brain Reward in Rats
TLDR
An important role for D3 receptors in mediating the addictive properties of cocaine is suggested and blockade of dopamine D3receptors may constitute a new and useful target for prospective pharmacotherapies for cocaine addiction.
Modulation of cocaine self-administration in the rat through D-3 dopamine receptors.
TLDR
Three dopamine receptor agonists had affinities for binding to the D-3 receptor that correlated highly with their relative potencies in decreasing cocaine self-administration in the rat at doses that were not by themselves reinforcing.

TLDR
DA at a low concentration reduces the excitatory response of hippocampal CA1 neurons after synaptic stimulation via the activation of presynaptic D2 receptors through a PTX-sensitive Gi-proteins-coupled to PKA pathway.
Cocaine-induced modulation of long-term potentiation in the CA1 region of rat hippocampus
D1/D5 Dopamine Receptor Activation Increases the Magnitude of Early Long-Term Potentiation at CA1 Hippocampal Synapses
TLDR
D dopamine produces a synapse-specific enhancement of early LTP through D1/D5 receptors and cAMP, indicating that dopamine should be able to modulate activity-dependent synaptic plasticity.
Local anaesthetic actions of cocaine: effects on excitatory and inhibitory synaptic responses in the hippocampus in vitro
TLDR
The results suggest that cocaine does not have a selective depressant effect upon inhibitory pathways in the CA1 region of the hippocampus, and although the hippocampus shows epileptiform activity following systemic administration of local anaesthetics such as cocaine in the intact rat, this effect may not reflect a direct hippocampal site of drug action.
Dopamine Selectively Inhibits the Direct Cortical Pathway to the CA1 Hippocampal Region
TLDR
The results provide the first evidence for strong dopaminergic control of transmission in the perforant path and suggest that dopamine hyperfunction and/or NMDA hypofunction abnormalities implicated in schizophrenia may isolate CA1 from its main source of sensory information.
Effects of dopamine, D-1 and D-2 dopaminergic agonists on the excitability of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells in guinea pig
TLDR
The results suggest that the effects observed in hippocampal pyramidal neurons after DA application of micromolar concentration are mediated by D-1 subtype of receptors.

TLDR
Dopamine was applied to CA1 region pyramidal cells in slices of guinea pig hippocampus maintained in vitro in order to examine its electrophysiological effect on CNS neurons, and the results suggest that DA-induced hyperpolarization and conductance changes are mediated by a Ca2+-activated K+ conductance.
