Cystathionine beta-synthase from yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) provides a model system for understanding some of the effects of disease-causing mutations in the human enzyme. The mutations, which lead to accumulation of L-homocysteine, are linked to homocystinuria and cardiovascular diseases.
