Differences in the stellar populations of galaxies can be used to quantify the effect of environment on the star formation history. We target a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey in two different environmental regimes: close pairs and a general sample where environment is measured by the mass of their host dark matter halo. We apply a blind source separation technique based on principal component analysis, from which we define two parameters that correlate… Expand

The role of environment on the formation of early-type galaxies
The effect of environment on galaxy formation poses one of the best constraints on the interplay between mass assembly and star formation in galaxies. We present here a detailed study of the stellarExpand
Decoding the spectra of SDSS early-type galaxies : New indicators of age and recent star formation
We apply Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a sample of early-type galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in order to infer differences in their star formation histories from theirExpand
Evolution and Environment of Early-Type Galaxies
Chemical abundance indicators are studied using composite spectra, which we provide in tabular form. Tables of line strengths measured from these spectra and parameters derived from these lineExpand
Star formation and nuclear activity in close pairs of early-type galaxies
We extract from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey a sample of 347 systems involving early type galaxies separated by less than 30 kpc, in projection, and 500 km/s in radial velocity. These close pairs areExpand
A Principal Component Analysis approach to the Star Formation History of elliptical galaxies in Compact Groups
Environmental differences in the stellar populations of early-type galaxies are explored using principal component analysis (PCA), focusing on differences between elliptical galaxies in HicksonExpand
Molecular gas and star formation in the SAURON early-type galaxies
We present the results of a survey of CO emission in 43 of the 48 representative E/S0 galaxies observed in the optical with the SAURON integral-field spectrograph. The CO detection rate is 12/43 orExpand
On the formation of massive galaxies: a simultaneous study of number density, size and intrinsic colour evolution in GOODS
The evolution of number density, size and intrinsic colour is determined for a volume-limited sample of visually classified early-type galaxies selected from the Hubble Space Telescope/AdvancedExpand
The structures of distant galaxies — IV. A new empirical measurement of the time-scale for galaxy mergers — implications for the merger history
Understanding the role of mergers in galaxy formation is one of the most outstanding problems in extragalactic astronomy. While we now have an idea for how the merger fraction evolves at redshifts zExpand
Galaxy Groups in the SDSS DR4. I. The Catalog and Basic Properties
We use a modified version of the halo-based group finder developed by Yang et al. to select galaxy groups from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS DR4). In the first step, a combination of two methodsExpand
Galaxy morphology in rich clusters: Implications for the formation and evolution of galaxies
A study of the galaxy populations in 55 rich clusters is presented together with a discussion of the implications for the formation and/or evolution of different morphological types. A well-definedExpand
